Giani Harpreet Singh, the acting chief of Akal Takht has said that the Sikhs are ready to accept Khalistan if it is offered by the country. The statement comes 36 years after the Operation Blue Star.

The Khalistan movement has been in the limelight even when the Britishers were governing India. The first pamphlet of Khalistan was printed in 1940. The movement refers to a separatist movement to create a homeland for Sikhs.

The President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Gobind Singh Longowal endorsed the statement of Giani Harpreet Singh. This is probably the first instance where the two supreme bodies of the community – Akal Takth and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has come out to the open in support of the separate state Khalistan. It is also particularly significant as it came on the 36th anniversary of Blue Star which is a day marked as Ghallughara (genocide) day.

Support From Separatists

Gajinder Singh, the radical leader of the separatists and the founder of Sikh organization Dal Khalsa, also wrote on his Facebook page in support of the statement. He wrote,

“The leader of Akal Takht Sahib has supported Khalistan in his own style today. May God bless us with the ability to protect his statement.”

The President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress committee condemned the statement as he said that those in positions of respect should also realize their responsibility. The President of Punjab BJP, Ashwani Sharma who is currently in alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal said,

“Not just Punjabis, but every Indian is religiously attached with Akal Takht, and those sitting on respectable positions should have not commented on something which hurts the unity and integrity of the nation.”
