Incontinence is a health condition caused due to several factors like ageing, nerve damage, pregnancy or menopause in women, and so on. As a result, people lose bladder control, and the urge to urinate is more than usual; leakages are common types seen in incontinence patients. This condition is more seen in women than in men, according to reports.

This condition occurs as an effect of other primary diseases also. People with this condition use products like bed mat for incontinence, disposable pads, washable pants, underwears and others. There are different types of incontinence, and it can be diagnosed by conducting tests. Some of the tests are ultrasound, bladder stress test, urodynamics, cystoscopy, and urine tests. TYPES OF INCONTINENCE:

  • STRESS INCONTINENCE:

People who are diagnosed with lung malfunctions like cystic fibrosis and emphysema have symptoms of severe coughs. The other reasons for stress incontinence are when the pelvic floor muscles are weak or when the bladder’s nerves are damaged. This state in both men and women affects the nerves and influences stress incontinence. Women are mostly affected by stress incontinence. The stress or physical strain in the body leads to urine leakages even if the person doesn’t feel like urinating, Physical activities like laughing, jumping, lifting results in leakages. This condition is not related to emotions or mental health. People with this condition can use disposable pads or washable incontinence underwear.   • URGE INCONTINENCE:

The bladder muscle named detrusor contracts and creates the urge to urinate. As the muscle contracts, it signals an urgency even though the bladder is not filled. This condition is found in patients having myofascial pelvic pain syndrome, accompanied by heaviness, burning sensation and pain in the pelvic area. This condition makes a person uncomfortable and embarrassed to go to the restroom multiple times. In addition, patients with neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s syndrome influences urge incontinence. However, few patients suffer from incontinence even after discharge and recovery. The urge incontinence is otherwise known as bladder overactivity or detrusor overactivity.

  • OVERFLOW INCONTINENCE:

Overflow incontinence is found in people who have blockages in the urinary tract. The muscle contractions are irregular or dysfunctional. This results in leakages through the bladder. The affected patients do not sense the urge to urinate. This type is prominently seen in men rather than women. The enlarged prostate in men causes overflow incontinence. The other conditions include bladder stones, scarred tissues, surgeries, nerve damage and tumours. People with cardiovascular problems and diabetes also suffer from overflow incontinence. 

  • FUNCTIONAL INCONTINENCE:

Functional incontinence is a side effect caused due to other primary diseases diagnosed in a patient. In this case, the functions of the urinary system are normal. Taking medications for mental illness and dementia fills the bladder faster, and failing to reach the toilets in time results in leakages. Certain treatments result in the release of urine in large amounts. People can’t control urination even during the nights. People in such cases can use a bed mat for incontinence which will prevent the bed from getting spoiled or ruined.
