We’ve all suffered from dry, chapped lips at some point in our lives, and it’s super annoying! Come winter, your lips go from smooth and supple to unsightly, and don’t we all hate it? Of course, we have the climate to blame, but there’s a lot more we can do than just waiting for spring. And in some cases, women have chapped lips, even when the weather is warm.
That’s because several irritants are to blame for chapped lips. And if you are someone who keeps licking your lips in a bid to moisturise them, then please STOP right away. This can make your case of dry lips worse.
So without wasting any more time, let’s give you practical solutions so that you can prevent chapped lips with ease.
1. Use a non-irritating lip balm
Remember it’s not the fanciest lip balms that are a sure-shot remedy for chapped lips. You need to get a non-irritating lip balm that causes no burning, stinging or tingling sensation. In case you feel any discomfort, it’s time to change the product before your problem gets worse.
As per research, lip balms that contain ingredients like camphor, eucalyptus, lanolin, or any kind of floral fragrance must be completely avoided. Instead, go for products that have natural ingredients like castor seed oil, hemp seed oil, shea butter, or petroleum jelly.
Make sure to apply lip balm several times a day.

2. Try using pure petroleum jelly
If your lips are severely chapped and lip balms don’t do the trick, then it’s time to switch to good old petroleum jelly. Just slather on some Vaseline and you should notice a marked difference within no time. But make sure to apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more before you apply the petroleum jelly. After all, protecting your lips from the harsh rays of the sun is equally important, if you step out every day!
3. Use a humidifier
If you live in an environment that is particularly dry, then it’s best to invest in a good humidifier. To prevent chapped lips, try and maintain humidity levels in the range of 30-50%. And make sure you clean your humidifier from time to time, because it could become a breeding ground for bacteria and make you sick! Now, that’s the last thing we want right?
4. Check your intake of vitamins and minerals
It is said that your body gives you signs from time to time if something is not right internally! Chapped lips could signal an underlying vitamin deficiency, so if no remedy works, then make sure to visit a doctor and get yourself checked. Try and consume a nutrient-rich diet that has B vitamins, iron, essential fatty acids, and minerals in good measure. And if you don’t get enough from your food, then you can always go for supplements too!
5. Stay hydrated
Not hydrating yourself can also cause dry and chapped lips. That’s why it is important to drink as much water as you can! And yes ladies, we know our water consumption goes down in winter, but make a conscious effort to have at least 8-10 glasses of H20 every day.
